I’m a 34DDD. I got myself recently sized, just so I have a reference point. The last time I got a bra fitting, a little over a year ago, I was a 32D/34DD (depending on the brand).
I decided to go braless a little over a year ago. The reason? I am a college student, and need to plan my money accordingly. For those of you unaware of how bra sizes work, I have a small band size (the average in stores tends to be between 36–40) and a big cup size (most stores only carry size A-D), which leads me to joking that my bra size is a unicorn (often talked about, rarely seen, beautiful to look at). My bra size at Victoria Secret’s (a well known lingerie store) in a plain, nude color bra would cost 50 US dollars (I just checked on a weekend in 2016). I don’t have that kind of money to just throw at something that only me and my boyfriend will see.
At first, I was very subconscious about it. However, after reading some scientific articles stating that there could be some health benefits to it (since the normally accepted statistic is that 50–75% of women are wearing the WRONG bra size), I decided to give it a shot. The truth of the matter is, that not wearing a bra, DOES NOT make your breasts “sag faster”. Everyone, boy or girl, has their body tissue sag everywhere as they get older. In fact, wearing a bra might actually help strengthen your pectoral (chest) muscles, to help them less likely to sag faster!
I started going braless in college. At first, I wasn’t sure if others would notice. To my surprise, no one did. My back did not ache when I first started to not wear them. In fact, I didn’t really notice a difference in the beginning. The only thing I have noticed as time has gone by is that one of my breasts is slightly bigger than the other one. However, this is normal. Most women have one breast slightly larger than the other (a very, very small percentage of women actually have them “truly” symmetrical).
My boyfriend didn’t mind that I decided to ditch the bra. I find it amusing now because when he sees me putting one on (*gasp*), he asks me why I’m wearing one. I tell him normally it’s for sanitation purposes (going out specifically to try on shirts from a second hand shop), or for a rare formal event I have to go out to (since I don’t have my hands on any pasties).
For the ladies that complain that their back hurts, go to the gym and work on your muscles in your chest and back. This will make your breasts less likely to be sore. Your chest might also just need some time to get used to your breasts “free hanging” if you haven’t done it on a regular basis before. If your nipples are very sensitive, put some cream moisturizer on them. You can also just wear pasties instead. Aloe vera, eucalyptus, and turmeric can all be used as herbal anti-inflammatory agents as well (please make sure you’re not allergic and it won’t interfere with any medication you are taking, or possibly make an illness you have worse).
